Mitmita (ሚጥሚጣ)

Mitmita (ሚጥሚጣ) is a hot Ethiopian chili blend made with bird's eye chili. It is fine, bright orange and much hotter than berbere, with a sharp, fast heat. It is also spelled mitmitta.

What does mitmita taste like?

Hot and sharp up front, with the aroma of korerima, koseret and black cumin behind it.

What is mitmita used for?

Kitfo is the main one. Mitmita makes or breaks kitfo: if the mitmita is not right, the kitfo is not right.

  • Kitfo, mixed with warm niter kibbeh
  • With ayib, the fresh Ethiopian cheese
  • On the side with tibs
  • With boiled eggs, and for some people with Ethiopian scrambled eggs
  • Stirred into melted niter kibbeh, as on genfo

What is in our mitmita?

Bird's eye chili, korerima, salt, black cumin, ajwain, koseret and rosemary. Our family has always made our own, from real whole spices.

Mitmita vs berbere

Mitmita is hotter and mostly used in kitfo and on the side. Berbere is milder and deeper, and is cooked into stews as their base.

How to store mitmita

Keep it sealed in a cool, dry place, away from the stove and direct sunlight, so the color and aroma last.
