Shiro Wot

Shiro Wot Recipe ሽሮ ወጥ አሰራር

The everyday stew every Habesha kitchen knows.

What you need

From your kitchen

  • Red onions
  • Cooking oil
  • Garlic
  • Tomato
  • Water
  • Salt

For the best shiro, cook it in a shekla dist (ሸክላ ድስት), a traditional clay pot. A regular pot works too.

How to make it

  1. Cook the onions. Cook chopped red onions until soft.
  2. Add oil, then garlic. Pour in the oil, then add the garlic.
  3. Add the berbere. Stir in the berbere.
  4. Add the tomato. Stir in chopped tomato.
  5. Add the shiro before the water. Stir the mitin shiro straight into the pot and combine it very well with everything in it. This is the secret to a great tasting shiro.
  6. Add water slowly. Add a tiny bit of water and stir. Keep adding a little at a time, then add a bit more once it is smooth.
  7. Season and boil. Add salt and bring it to a boil. Serve hot.
